BMW S63 Race Series Engine Build - ZNM Performance
ZNM Performance Race Series Engine Build Program
Introducing our BMW S63 engine program—engineered for owners of M-powered V8s who demand exceptional performance, durability, and meticulous craftsmanship. This page applies to all variants of the BMW S63 engine, including the S63B44O0 (original F10 M5), S63B44T0 (F10 M5 Competition, F12 M6, F13 M6), S63B44T2 (F85 X5M, F86 X6M), and S63B44T4 (F90 M5, F95 X5M, F96 X6M).
The BMW S63 is a twin-turbocharged 4.4L V8 with direct injection and hot-vee layout—delivering immense performance from the factory. However, extended high-boost use, aggressive tuning, and road course or drag strip abuse often push factory components—such as rod bearings, piston ringlands, timing chains, and head gaskets—beyond their limits.
That’s where our S63 engine build program comes in. Every S63 is disassembled to the bare block, thoroughly measured, and rebuilt in-house with forged internals, o-ringed deck machining, and optional cylinder sleeving to support serious power goals. Whether you're building a high-boost street monster, weekend track car, or roll-race setup, our Race Series S63s are built for relentless power with long-term reliability.
Our facility in Pompton Lakes, NJ builds engines for customers across the U.S. and internationally. All engines are fully disassembled, measured, and assembled in-house with final clearances precisely set by our team. Please inquire about international shipping options.

- Block deck prepared for stainless receiver grooves and combustion sealing reinforcement
- Optional ductile iron cylinder sleeves from Darton or Italian Rods & Pistons for maximum wall strength
- Forged pistons, upgraded connecting rods with ARP625+ or L19 bolts, and balanced rotating assemblies
- Built to withstand 1000–1500+ HP with proper fueling and tuning
Cylinder Head Upgrades for Your S63
- Complete cylinder head disassembly, hot tank cleaning, and crack inspection
- Supertech valve springs and titanium retainers for high-RPM stability under boost
- Upgraded valve guides from GSC Power Division—ideal for high-heat turbo environments
- Optional Inconel exhaust valves and stainless intake valves for severe-duty applications
- Ideal for drag, roll-race, and track builds pushing the limits of the factory valvetrain
Bearing Upgrades for Your S63
- Race-grade main and rod bearings available from ACL and King for improved wear resistance
- Coated bearing shells to reduce startup wear and improve oil film strength under high load
- Clearances set based on oil viscosity, RPM range, and intended power level—not generic specs
- Addresses known S63 bearing issues—factory bearings are prone to wear in high-heat and low-viscosity conditions
- Precision measurements taken using micrometers and bore gauges on every journal and shell
- Ideal for aggressive tuning, extended high-RPM use, and builds targeting 900+ HP
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Can the stock S63 engine handle 900+ HP reliably?
A: While the S63 is a strong platform, sustained use above 850–900 HP often leads to bearing wear, head gasket failure, or piston damage. Our Race Series builds address these weak points with upgraded internals and optimized machining.
Q: Do I need to sleeve my S63 block?
A: For engines that have bore damage, run oversized pistons, or are targeting over 1,000 HP, we recommend Darton or Italian Rods & Pistons ductile iron sleeves to restore cylinder integrity and wall strength.
Q: What is o-ringed block deck machining?
A: O-ring machining involves cutting stainless steel grooves into the block deck to improve combustion sealing when used with OEM multi-layer steel head gaskets. This reduces the chance of head lift under extreme boost conditions.
Q: Are there any camshaft upgrades available for the S63?
A: At this time, no off-the-shelf aftermarket camshafts exist for the S63. However, we offer full valvetrain support including Supertech springs, GSC guides, and optional valve upgrades for high-RPM stability.
Q: What bearings do you use and how are clearances set?
A: We use race-proven bearings from ACL and King. Every set is precisely measured using micrometers and bore gauges, and clearance is tailored to your oil choice, RPM target, and power level—not guesswork or generic specs.
