BMW N55 Race Series Engine Build - ZNM Performance
ZNM Performance Race Series Engine Build Program
Introducing our BMW N55 engine program—built for enthusiasts who demand reliable power, forged strength, and precision machining from BMW's first single-turbo direct-injection inline-6. This page applies to all N55-equipped models, including the F30 335i, F22 M235i, F10 535i, E82 135i, and more.
The BMW N55 features a 3.0L inline-6 with a twin-scroll turbocharger, VANOS, and Valvetronic systems. While responsive and capable of solid power gains, these engines are known for bottom end bearing issues and weak factory pistons and connecting rods —making them excellent candidates for a complete race-spec rebuild.
That’s where our N55 engine build program comes in. Every engine is fully disassembled, cleaned, and inspected. We install forged internals, precision-machine every surface, and offer upgrades like closed-deck conversion, pinned crank hub, and upgraded valve components for high-horsepower street or track use. Whether you're chasing reliable daily torque or building a 1000+whp street monster, our Race Series N55s deliver.
Our facility in Pompton Lakes, NJ builds engines for customers across the U.S. and internationally. All engines are fully disassembled, measured, and assembled in-house with final clearances precisely set by our team. Please inquire about international shipping options.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: How reliable is the stock N55 at high boost?
A: Stock N55s have an open deck design leading to premature cylinder failure and rod bearing wear beyond 450–500whp. Our builds solve these issues using forged internals, upgraded oiling, and crank hub fixes for reliable high-power use.
Q: Can I run ethanol (E85) with this build?
A: Yes. With proper tuning, injectors, and fuel system upgrades, our Race Series N55s are built to handle E85 safely. Forged internals are especially important to support the added boost.
Q: What turbo options are compatible?
A: We support both stock-frame hybrid turbos and full-frame bottom or top mount setups. Builds are custom-tailored based on your power goals and use case (street, drag, roll-race, etc.).
Q: What head studs do you use?
A: ARP 2000 or ARP 625+ head studs are used depending on your target boost pressure and whether methanol or ethanol is being used.
Q: Do you offer sleeves for the N55?
A: Yes we can get this done with Darton sleeves.
