A dedicated player in the process of transformation and an active part of societal change: for more than 100 years, Pierburg has been a driver of progress in the field of mobility – over and over again. As specialists for increasing efficiency, CO2 reduction, and lowering of emissions, the four Pierburg Business Units are solution providers, agents of change, and architects of sustainable mobility with a clear commitment to climate protection and cleaner air.

For its customers, Pierburg is an integral development partner and supplier of components and systems in the Rheinmetall Automotive competence pool. We bring together expertise and practical know-how from our various Business Units – often across continents – whenever you require solutions of a particularly high quality. Our products are outstanding with respect to their sustainability and efficiency, future viability, and ecological footprint.

Solenoid Valves

"Diesel" and "downsizing" are terms that largely account for the popularity of electropneumatic transducers, a prime mainstay of Pierburg's sales. These are devices employed either in controlling EGR systems or for varying the turbine geometry on the turbocharger.

Likewise for use with turbochargers are Pierburg's electric divert-air valves which in engine cruising mode open the bypass from the pressure to the suction side of the compressor. Together with another Pierburg product, the charge-pressure control valve, they allow swift charger response to the respective drive situation for superior acceleration and reduced noise. Moreover, they cost less than the electropneumatic valve systems built in to date and take up less space.

Other applications for closed-loop pneumatic control circuits include activated carbon filter shutoff valves for onboard diagnosis; shutoff valves for direct-fuel injection on gasoline engines and electric switchover valves for such jobs as flap control and secondary air systems.

Vacuum Pumps

One could do without them. Diesel or gasoline engines alike, more and more vehicles nowadays depend on specific vacuum pumps. These pumps generate the vacuum needed for boosting brake performance, vacuum which is also required for controlling actuators and for exhaust gas recirculation.

We have developed the vacuum pump system which is most frequently used today, the single-vane design, into a highly cost-competitive version that perfectly addresses our customers' vacuum needs in every respect. The pump features a rotary drive and is available in 4 different standard sizes ranging from 90 cm3, to 260 cm3. Its low power intake is attributable to the design principle applied and reduces fuel consumption; in addition, it can be fitted with separate vacuum ports for brake boosters and actuators.

Less is often more: in designing the single-vane vacuum pumps, we had their production costs in mind right from the start. As a result, we succeeded in keeping them lean with a minimum of parts and machining operations. So they are not only robust, but also highly cost-efficient. We did not lose sight of environmental aspects either: all materials used for the single-vane vacuum pump are easily recyclable.

The single-vane vacuum pumps come ready for installation, with customer-specific vacuum port, oil tube for pressure lubrication directly via the camshaft plus an element for sealing the pump against the cylinder head.

Depending on engine requirements, rotation is clockwise or counterclockwise. Another advantage: viable integration solutions ideally addressing the trend of carmakers towards modular assemblies that occupy as little space as possible. In other words: pumps with different functions such as oil and vacuum pumps, for example, can be modularized and combined in an ever more reduced space.

Moreover, existing products are undergoing constant optimization in order to improve the efficiency of the pump itself and increase its efficiency in interaction with the engine. To this end, new materials are tried and applied and controllable or electrically assisted systems developed.
