BMW S52 Race Series Engine Build - ZNM Performance
ZNM Performance Race Series Engine Build Program
Introducing our BMW S52 engine program—engineered for enthusiasts seeking durable, high-performance rebuilds of BMW’s legendary U.S.-spec inline-6 found in the E36 M3 and Z3 M. This page applies to all S52-equipped models including the 1996–1999 M3 and Z3 M Coupe/Roadster.
The BMW S52 features a 3.2L iron block with aluminum DOHC head, single-VANOS, and solid tuning potential. While robust, factory engines often suffer from head gasket fatigue, oil pump nut failures, and ring land damage when boosted or tracked aggressively.
That’s where our S52 engine build program comes in. Every engine is fully disassembled, cleaned, and measured. We perform block machining, precision surfacing, and upgrade internals for improved reliability and output. Whether you're building a turbocharged drift setup or a responsive NA track car, our Race Series S52s are purpose-built to handle it.
Our facility in Pompton Lakes, NJ builds engines for customers across the U.S. and internationally. All engines are fully disassembled, measured, and assembled in-house with final clearances precisely set by our team. Please inquire about international shipping options.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Can the S52 be built for boost?
A: Absolutely. While the S52 is naturally aspirated from the factory, its iron block and robust head make it an excellent candidate for turbocharging. We recommend forged internals, ARP 625+ head studs, and standalone tuning for builds targeting 500–700whp.
Q: What limits the factory S52 at high RPM?
A: OEM rods and valve springs tend to float or stretch near redline. Our builds address this with forged internals, upgraded valvetrain, and full balancing to safely rev beyond 7500 RPM.
Q: Do you rebuild my original engine or source another block?
A: We typically rebuild your original S52B32 or a donor core, depending on condition. We also offer core sourcing and shipping support for remote customers.
Q: Can I daily drive a Race Series S52?
A: Yes. Our S52 builds are engineered to retain street manners while offering increased reliability and performance. Ideal for dual-purpose street/track builds or spirited weekend cars.
Q: Do you offer wiring or ECU support for swaps and standalone systems?
A: Yes. We support MS3, MaxxECU, LINK, and MoTeC standalone systems with wiring harness design, CAN integration, and base mapping for high-performance S52 builds.
